My Biggest MCU Netflix Questions Before Daredevil: Born Again Season 2

With Daredevil: Born Again season 2 only days away, the opportunity for Marvel Studios to revive threads and bring back characters from the MCU’s Netflix era is huge. We know Krysten Ritter is set to return as Jessica Jones this season, though one has to wonder what else the MCU might have in store.

When thinking about the Netflix era of Marvel Television, which ended in 2019, multiple shows ended with unresolved arcs and major cliffhangers. Keeping that in mind, here are some of my biggest Netflix-era questions ahead of Daredevil: Born Again season 2.

Is Jessica Jones Still A P.I.?

When we last saw Jessica Jones, the one-time Defender was still active with her agency, Alias Investigations. Likewise, her identity as a private investigator was far more prominent than any desire to be a “superhero”, regardless of her enhanced abilities.

It’s been seven years since the end of Jessica Jones season 3, and nearly just as much time has passed in-universe. Perhaps Jessica has embraced more of an outright vigilante role in the interim?

It would help explain her return, seeing how Daredevil is gathering allies in his war against Mayor Fisk and his anti-vigilante task force. Regardless, some kind of reference or even a scene taking place inside Alias would go a long way to letting audiences know what she’s been up to since we last saw her in the MCU.

Are Jessica Jones and Luke Cage Married?

Although Luke Cage did make a final appearance in Jessica Jones season 3, Jessica’s complicated romance with Luke in the MCU never received a definitive happy ending by the end of Marvel’s shows on Netflix. However, there’s certainly an opportunity seven years later to finally give the power couple the resolution MCU fans have been desperate for.

In the original Marvel Comics, Jessica Jones and Luke Cage eventually get married and even have a daughter. As such, it would be pretty cool if Daredevil: Born Again season 2 were to reveal a similar progression for Jessica and Luke, even if it all happened off-screen in the MCU.

What Happened With Luke Cage’s Crime Boss Arc?

The ending of Luke Cage season 2 concluded the Netflix show on a major cliffhanger. Luke had inherited Harlem’s Paradise from Black Mariah, positioning himself as a new kind of crime boss with the apparent belief that he could control the system from within.

As such, the clear tease was that Luke Cage season 3 was going to explore all kinds of morally grey areas, though it never paid off following all the Netflix show cancellations preceding the dawn of Disney+.

Now, it’s possible that Daredevil: Born Again season 2 could revisit the concept, or at least confirm whether Luke is still running his club in Harlem. It definitely seems like an easy line for Jessica to give when and if she’s asked about Luke’s whereabouts.

That said, it would be fascinating to see a more involved scenario where it’s revealed that Luke Cage perhaps cut a deal with Mayor Fisk despite his vigilante past, negotiating with the Kingpin “crime boss to crime boss.”

What Happened to Danny Rand’s Iron Fist?

Similarly, Iron Fist season 2 also ended on a major cliffhanger following its cancellation. The ending revealed that Danny Rand left New York to search for Orson Randall, seeking to learn more about his predecessor and the legends of the Iron Fist. Likewise, he’d also learned how to channel his chi through dual pistols while traveling in Asia with Ward Meachum.

Meanwhile, Colleen Wing became the MCU’s brand-new Iron Fist operating in New York, channeling her chi not through her fist but through her signature sword. Presumably, Colleen is still the MCU’s current Iron Fist. As such, one has to wonder if Wing is still in New York during Fisk’s vigilante war. That’s something she definitely wouldn’t ignore if she could help it.

While the odds of appearances feel low, a quick update on what’s been going on with Danny and/or Colleen in this new season of Daredevil: Born Again would do wonders.

What’s Going On With The Hand?

The sinister ninja cult known as The Hand was a major connective threat across multiple Netflix shows, especially in 2017’s The Defenders, where Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Danny Rand first came together as allies to take on The Hand’s leadership and their dark resurrection of Elektra Natchios.

While the crossover series ended with The Hand’s leadership all defeated, the first trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day confirms that The Hand is still operating in New York. As such, a major revelation like this absolutely opens the door for some very exciting cross-project storytelling involving Daredevil and perhaps even more Netflix era MCU heroes with experience fighting the ninja cult.

A really exciting possibility is Daredevil: Born Again season 2 potentially being used by Marvel Studios to tee up the Hand’s presence in Brand New Day. Then again, perhaps Spider-Man: Brand New Day will be the MCU project that helps set up The Hand for an appearance in the already confirmed Daredevil: Born Again season 3.

Either way, it’s pretty exciting to see that the major villain organization in New York is still kicking in the MCU, especially right before Daredevil: Born Again season 2’s premiere.

Will More Defenders Join Daredevil’s Army Beyond Jessica?

A full-on reunion of The Defenders would naturally be a full-circle moment for longtime MCU fans. For all their clashing personalities and differing powersets, the 2017 crossover proved these heroes are absolutely great together.

Of course, Jessica Jones joining Matt Murdock is exciting all on its own, though you have to wonder who else might show up as well. After all, Mayor Fisk’s Anti-Vigilante Task Force is a massive city-wide threat directly targeting every vigilante operating in New York.

That should certainly warrant some major backup.

Without a doubt, Daredevil: Born Again season 2 is the kind of story that would definitely make a Defenders reunion nine years later feel more than earned, rather than being shoe-horned in for fan service.

Where Is The Punisher?

Although The Punisher escaped Mayor Fisk’s task force at the end of Daredevil: Born Again season 1, it doesn’t look like Frank Castle will continue to aid Matt Murdock, despite the full kick-off of Daredevil’s war with Kingpin in Born Again season 2.

We know that Punisher has his upcoming MCU Special later this year, as well as his appearance with Spider-Man in Brand New Day. Combined with his absence in marketing materials for Born Again season 2, it feels safe to say that he won’t be around.

However, it’d be nice to know why Frank’s not sticking around to protect Karen Page and keep helping “Red.” Perhaps the events of the MCU’s new Punisher Special will be taking place at the same time?

Where’s Spider-Man In All of This?

Again, Fisk’s new war is targeting all vigilantes in New York, not just those who had a Netflix show. That makes Tom Holland’s Spider-Man pretty hard to ignore, especially when a trailer drops showcasing all of his New York-based activities. Mayor Fisk even publicly referenced Spider-Man in Daredevil: Born Again season 1.

While Marvel Studios has done a good job tempering expectations for a full-on appearance from Spider-Man, it’d be nice to get some kind of reference to the iconic Webslinger at some point in the new Daredevil season. Then again, perhaps the absence will be explained in Brand New Day instead.
