The Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, and the US president, Donald Trump, seemed to leave the negotiations on a high fire in Gaza with the Palestinian militant group Hamás, a day after withdrawing his delegations from the conversations.

Netanyahu said that Israel is now evaluating “alternatives” options to achieve its goals to bring home to hostages that remain retained in Gaza and end the Hamas government in the territory. Trump said Hamas does not want to reach an agreement and that he believes that group leaders will be “persecuted” now.

The statements followed those made during the night by the American envoy Steve Witkoff, who said that Hamas is the culprit of the stagnation of the negotiations for the high fire, with the mediation of Qatar and Egypt. Netanyahu said Witkoff is right in saying that Hamas is the obstacle to reaching an agreement.

Hamas delivered on Thursday his response to a high fire proposal backed by the United States, but Israel announced hours later his withdrawal from the negotiators to celebrate consultations.

Hamas refuted the characterization of the conversations made by Witkoff and said the negotiators are making progress. According to the Palestinian group, Witkoff’s statements intend to press Israel for a future negotiations.

The high on the proposed fire would have lasted 60 days, during which the entry of more help in Gaza would be allowed and some of the 50 Israeli hostages would be released in exchange for Palestinian prisoners in the possession of Israel.
