Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held his first telephone conversation with the already elected president of the United States, Donald Trump, to convey his congratulations after his electoral victory in the presidential elections and agreed to “work together for the security of Israel.”
The two agreed to work together for Israel’s security and also spoke about “the Iranian threat,” the statement from the Prime Minister’s Office said. During the morning of this Wednesday when the results already declared Trump the winner, Netanyahu was one of the first world leaders to publicly celebrate this victory on his X account.
“Your historic return to the White House offers a new beginning for America and a return to commitment to the great alliance between Israel and the United States. “It’s a great victory!” he wrote on his social network.
The Republican’s return to the White House comes while the Israeli Government continues its fight against the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) to prohibit it from continuing to operate in territory controlled by Israel.
Precisely, Trump in his previous term (in 2018) suspended financial aid for this agency, reduced funds for development projects in the West Bank and Gaza and closed the office of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) in Washington.
The most far-right wing of the Israeli Government, on the other hand, also celebrated the result of the presidential elections and hopes to find greater harmony with Trump to, among other things, be able to implement its colonialist policies in the occupied West Bank.
The big unknown now is the response that the president-elect will give to the offensive that Israel continues to maintain in the Gaza Strip and Lebanon, when today after his first speech he said: “We do not want wars. “I’m not going to start a war, I’m going to stop them.”
