The new court of judicial discipline (TDJ), which will monitor all judges in Mexico, is also drawn related to Morena, after the unprecedented judicial election of June 1, according to the count of votes that reaches 99.7% this Thursday.

Like the next Supreme Court, the five candidates who are outlined as TDJ magistrates were proposed or have been close to the government headed by President Claudia Sheinbaum.

In addition, their names appear in the “accordions” to influence the vote, distributed days before the elections throughout the country, which has aroused criticism of the opposition and civil organizations.

The TDJ, created following the judicial reform of 2024, will replace the Federal Judiciary Council (CJF) in its disciplinary function.

With the reform, the functions of the CJF were redistributed between the TDJ, -responsible for the surveillance and discipline of all the judges of the country -, and the body of judicial administration, -in charge of the administration and judicial career -, whose members will be chosen by the three powers of the government and not by popular vote.

About the closure of the calculation of the votes by the National Electoral Institute (INE), with almost 13% citizen participation, the five candidates who head the voting were postulated by the Executive Power or currently occupy a position in the CJF, which they were proposed by the Senate or by former president Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

The three candidates who are aimed at integrating the new TDJ are the current Ministry of the CJF, Celia Maya García and Eva Verónica de Gyvés Zárate, in addition to Indira Isabel García Pérez, proposed by the Executive.

While the new TDJ magistrates would be Bernardo Bátiz Vázquez, current member of the CJF, and Rufino H. León Tovar, postulated by President Sheinbaum.

The TDJ will enter into functions on September 1 and its mandate will last six years, with a rotating presidency every two years.

This body will be independent of the Judiciary and its decisions will be “definitive and unattainable and, therefore, no judgment or appeal against them is not proceeded,” the reform establishes.

Their functions range from evaluating performance to investigating and sanctioning administrative offenses of judge, but cannot dismiss ministers of the Court or electoral magistrates.

Judicial elections in Mexico represent an unprecedented model worldwide, since for the first time more than 800 federal judicial positions were submitted to direct election.

INE figures estimate that participation did not exceed 13%, of the almost 100 million that were called to vote.

This unpublished electoral process now faces the challenge of counting the votes, an exercise that will take at least 10 days and the complete results are expected to be official on June 15.
