Mexico registered 7,000 kidnappings during the six years of the government of former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO), a 40% reduction compared to those during the six-year term of his predecessor, Enrique Peña Nieto, who far exceeded 11,000 events of this type, according to data of the Stop Kidnapping association.

This non-governmental organization dedicated to documenting and reporting cases of kidnapping in Mexico presented this Wednesday a report regarding the figures recorded in the period 2018-2024, corresponding to the AMLO government in which the exact number of 7,014 kidnappings was recorded, which It is equivalent to more than three daily.

During this period, five entities accumulated almost half of these crimes, a list led by Veracruz with 1,073 registered kidnappings, followed by the State of Mexico with 1,023, and far behind Mexico City, slightly below 500, and Puebla and Chihuahua slightly below 300 cases.

As for municipalities, in first place is Culiacán, capital of Sinaloa with 180 kidnappings, then Juárez, Chihuahua with 160 and in third place Tijuana, Baja California, with a total of 107.

However, according to the different population density of each state, Veracruz stands out negatively, with a rate of 13.31 kidnappings per one hundred thousand inhabitants, followed by the entities of Morelos, Zacatecas and Quintana Roo, all of them with an average figure greater than 10 per every hundred thousand, when the national rate is 5.56/100,000.

Regarding this last year, the organization reports an increase of 31% in the first nine months of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023, with September as the most negative month due to the figures that Sinaloa contributes in this last record, 142 kidnappings in a month, as a result of the clashes that are taking place there between different factions of organized crime.

Also during September 2024, the last month analyzed, the mass kidnapping of 138 migrants in the state of Chiapas was lamented.
