Today officially marks the 40th anniversary of The Legend of Zelda series, which debuted with the original game’s release in Japan on February 21, 1986. It’s a momentous occasion for one of gaming’s biggest flagships, and it would stand to reason that Nintendo would be going all-out in celebration. Surprisingly, the company has been completely silent on social media so far.
In lieu of posts about the Zelda series, Nintendo’s X account has been sticking to the regular programming, with posts about Pokémon Pokopia, Xenoblade Chronicles X, and the Nintendo Switch Online library. In the comments, Zelda fans have started to express their frustrations, while fans of other Nintendo franchises are taking a more tongue-in-cheek approach to the situation.
Zelda Fans Are Frustrated With Nintendo’s Silence
A Simple Mention Would Be Enough
In response to the latest post about Nintendo Switch Online, which highlights Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island as a standout SNES inclusion, Tropixify shared an image of Sonic tapping his foot impatiently and a request for an update on Zelda. Leaf_guardian made a similar reply to the Xenoblade Chronicles X post, accompanying their query about “Zelda 40th anniversary announcements” with an image of Toon Link giving a side-eye.
Necro Felipe is having fun with the situation, framing Nintendo’s celebration of Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island as official confirmation that “Yoshi >>> Zelda.” ShadowLightMew, meanwhile, argues that “February has been Pokémon month for a long time now” and suggests that Zelda fans should enjoy Nintendo Today & Nintendo Music content while waiting for March to roll around.
Zelda Anniversary Content Might Come Later
There’s A Long Year Ahead
A major Zelda announcement might simply not be in the cards, and new games aren’t likely to roll around for a while yet regardless. The best hope would be for the Wii U remasters of Twilight Princess and The Wind Waker to finally make their way to the Switch and Switch 2, but there’s no telling whether Nintendo has them at theready.
Even so,it would be nice to have a post in celebration of the milestone, whether it’s accompanied by an announcement or not. If the day ends up passing without any mention of Zelda, a lot of fans are going to walk away feeling dissatisfied.
There’s still a chance that big Zelda reveals could happen later this year. Some previous Zelda anniversaries made use of E3 for major announcements, so Nintendo could be holding out for a March or summer Direct. Hopefully, The Legend of Zelda‘s 40th anniversary celebrations are just biding their time.
