Nvidia says that their chips do not have ‘back door’, in the midst of Chinese concerns

Nvidia said Thursday that their products do not have “rear doors” that allow remote access or control, after China expressed concern about possible safety risks of the artificial intelligence chip (AI) H20 of the company.

The administration of the Cyberspace of China (CAC), the country’s internet regulator, expressed concern for an American proposal so that advanced semiconductors sold abroad are equipped with monitoring and positioning functions.

The measure of the CAC shows uncertainty about the sales prospects of the American company in China weeks after an export prohibition imposed by the United States was revoked.

The regulator said he summoned NVIDIA to a meeting this Thursday to explain if his H20 chip has any rear door security risk, since he is concerned that the data of Chinese users and privacy rights may be affected.

A rear door risk refers to a hidden method to avoid normal authentication or security controls.

In a statement, a Nvidia spokesman said that “cybersecurity has a critical importance for us. Nvidia does not have ‘rear doors’ in their chips that allow any remote way to access them or control them.”

The White House and both Congress cameras proposed to demand from American chip companies that include verification technology of the location in their products to prevent them from deviating to countries where export laws prohibit their sale. These initiatives did not even become a formal norm and no technical requirements were established.

The company developed the H20 chip for the Chinese market after the United States imposed export restrictions of advanced IA chips at the end of 2023.
