The Organization of American States (OAS) on Friday of the beginning of the deployment of its electoral observers mission to examine the historic first election to the Judiciary in Mexico.
The mission, headed by the former chancellor of Chile, Heraldo Muñoz Valenzuela, “his work begins this weekend” in Mexico, the OAS indicated in a statement.
Integrated by 16 specialists from 10 countries, the delegation will analyze issues related to the organization and electoral technology, electoral justice, judiciary and the participation of women, following the precedent of the three judicial elections that the OAS has previously observed in the region, said the international body.
In Latin America, Bolivia was the first country to implement judicial elections, observed by the OAS in 2011, 2017 and 2024.
The organization explained that during its work in Mexico, the observers mission “will meet with government representatives, electoral authorities and the Judiciary, candidacies, civil society members and academics, among other actors.”

The main objective of the meetings is “to know the different perspectives on the electoral process in the country,” added the agency.
After the voting, the OAS mission will issue “a preliminary report with its observations and recommendations”, and subsequently, will present a final report before the Permanent Council of the Organization, he explained.
The head of the mission was in charge of leading in 2024 the mission of observers of the elections that resulted in the triumph of the president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum.
Muñoz Valenzuela also led the OAS observation about Ecuador’s general elections at the beginning of 2025.
This is the eighth electoral mission deployed by the OAS in Mexico, and it was possible “thanks to the financial contributions of Canada, Colombia, Korea, the United States, France, Panama, the Netherlands and the Dominican Republic,” concluded the agency.
In just over a week, on Sunday, June 1, Mexico will have its first popular election of the Judiciary, where 99.7 million citizens are called to the polls to choose from more than 3,400 candidates to renew 881 judicial posts, including the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN), in addition to hundreds of local positions.

The campaigns began on March 30 and will end on May 28, with opposition alerts, of international organizations such as the UN, current judges and civil associations about a possible interference of the Executive and organized crime in the elections.
