Mexico City, (EFE) .- The International Accompaniment Mission, one of the first electoral expert committees that will observe the unprecedented judicial election in Mexico, said challenges towards the elections of June 1, such as the scope of the information of the candidacies and the motivation of the population to vote.

So far, there are 77 observers from different countries grouped in a dozen missions, both independent and international organizations, according to data from the National Electoral Institute (INE).

The international accompaniment mission, a delegation of independent specialists headed by Katie Uriona, had this week his first visit to Mexico, where he will return a few days before the next elections.

Uriona, Chief of the Mission and former president of the Supreme Court (TSE) of Bolivia (2015-2018), explained that at the end of the electoral process the delegation will issue a report on their observations and recommendations so that “experiences in other countries in the region that could lead to similar initiatives”.

Among other challenges, Uriona highlighted the “titanic work” of the electoral authority to generate sufficient information for citizens regarding candidacies, given the restriction of electoral campaigns.

“The challenge is that the population can proactively compromise to know the candidacies through the mechanisms” provided by the electoral authorities, “he said at a press conference at the INE facilities in the Mexican capital.

Uriona, who supervised the judicial elections in 2017 in Bolivia, also saw how a challenge to motivate the population to participate in the elections, despite the fact that in that country the vote is mandatory and local judicial charges were not chosen, as will happen in Mexico.

“Even so, the motivation of the population to participate and attend their vote, turns out to be significantly lower in relation to electoral processes for the presidency of local levels,” he said, reaching less than 50% of the electoral roll, although he did not specify the figure.

Uriona added that during this first visit his goal is to hold meetings with the different areas of the INE to learn first hand how the process is going, as well as with members of the Evaluation Committees of the three powers of the Government (Executive, Legislative and Judicial), to understand the procedures followed from the applications to the evaluation.

However, the former president of the TSE of Bolivia avoided commenting on the candidates who have been accused of alleged links with organized crime and the commission of crimes, and pointed out that this work corresponds to the international observers of the “jurisdictional area” of the electoral authority.

Mexico prepares for its first popular election of the Judiciary on June 1, where 99.7 million citizens are called to the polls to choose from more than 3,400 candidates to renew 881 judicial posts, including the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN).
