76% of workers in Mexico have experienced salary inequality among colleagues with the same functions and responsibilities, according to Occ.
Of that percentage, 60% said they lived personally, while 16% have observed it in their professional environment, while 20% said they had not experienced it and 4% said they are not sure if it was a case of discrimination, according to a survey prior to the International Day of Salary Equality, which is celebrated on September 18.
Salary inequality not only affects the trust of collaborators, but can also cause rotation, demotivation and damage the employer, said Karla Villanueva, Business Intelligence and Market Manager of the West, according to a statement.
“In a competitive labor market, guaranteeing fair conditions is a strategic advantage to attract and retain talent,” he said.

The survey also evidenced that talking about wages is still a sensitive issue in the work centers: 50% acknowledged having discussed or asked about the issue only with trusted colleagues, 37% never shares it for considering it delicate and 13% said they speak it openly.
According to the OC, ignoring salary inequality can translate into loss of productivity and difficulties in attracting talent. On the other hand, establishing clear compensation policies and opening spaces for dialogue can strengthen the competitiveness of organizations.
The “labor thermometer”, in its 270s, was held between September 8 and 14 with the participation of 1,779 workers in Mexico.
