Mexico is among the 10 countries with the highest relationship in the world trade of counterfeit products, according to the “Mapping Global Trade in Fakes 2025” report, prepared by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) in collaboration with the Intellectual Property Office of the European Union (EUIPO).

The study positioned Mexico within countries with a greater proportion of customs seizures both in number and value of counterfeit products between 2020 and 2021.

The information was collected from global customs data, where about 50 categories of products vulnerable to falsification were analyzed, from cosmetics to electronic devices.

The document stressed that “virtually any product protected by intellectual property rights is likely to be falsified,” and stressed that this illegal activity affects key industries, deteriorates consumer confidence and harms both economies and innovation.

The list also includes powers such as China, Türkiye and the United Arab Emirates, as well as emerging economies.

Mexico also highlighted as one of the countries of origin of false cosmetic products, according to the seizures reported during the analyzed period.

The report also evidenced that falsification is not limited to luxury products, as the most frequent seizures included daily use items such as chargers, batteries, cosmetics and small appliances.

In addition to the economic impacts, the OECD warned about the risks for the health and safety of consumers, especially in areas such as medicines, food or personal care products.

China remains the main source of counterfeit products, although other regions contribute significantly.

In fact, an index that estimates the probability that specific countries are important sources of falsified exports, indicates that during 2020-2021, the falsified clothing sources were numerous and extended throughout the world, and Bangladesh, Lebanon, Syria and Turkey were considered key sources of these illicit products.

The report stated that in 2021, the worldwide trade of counterfeit products was valued at approximately 467,000 million US dollars, which represented 2.3% of the total world imports.

This absolute value represented an increase with respect to 2019, when the trade of counterfeit products was estimated at 464,000 MDD, although its relative proportion decreased compared to 2019, when it represented 2.5 % of world trade.
