The 25% tariff imposed by the US Commerce Department on certain high-end semiconductors, announced Wednesday on national security grounds, is a “phase one” action to protect the sector and could be followed by other announcements, depending on negotiations with other countries and companies, a White House official said Thursday.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, noted that President Donald Trump had previously threatened a 100% tariff on chips not made in the U.S. as he seeks to strengthen semiconductor production in the country.
