The news that Stranger Things: Tales From ’85 introduces at least two new characters to the already sprawling cast of Stranger Things proves that the spinoff will almost certainly kill off more cast members. The finale of Stranger Things was met with a wide variety of reactions, with some fans praising its ambiguity regarding Eleven’s fate.
However, a vocal minority of the show’s viewers were so disappointed that the Stranger Things #ConformityGate conspiracy theory began to trend on social media. This theory, which was soon disproven, suggested that there was another, do-over finale on the way that would rewrite the endings of all the show’s heroes.
Stranger Things: Tales From ’85 Has At Least Two New Characters
It is easy to see why some viewers hoped that the series would offer viewers another ending. Not only did Eleven seemingly get killed off, but many characters also received bland, predictable fates. This was almost unavoidable in a show with so many characters, but outside of outliers like Jonathan’s Stranger Things finale story, there were a lot of abandoned character arcs.
Judging by the trailer for Netflix’s animated spinoff Stranger Things: Tales From ’85, the show won’t be doing much to fix this issue. Set between seasons 2 and 3, this interquel follows Dustin, Mike, El, Lucas, and Max as they battle monsters in Hawkins. The trailer also introduces two new characters.
Tales From ’85’s New Characters Have To Be Written Out Of The Story Somehow
There is Steve’s love interest, Natalie, from the end of the trailer, and Nikki Baxter. It’s not entirely clear whether Nikki is visible in the trailer, but her presence in the spinoff was already announced before the trailer debuted.
However, whether Nikki is in the trailer or not might be immaterial. After all, characters introduced in interquels are always at a high risk of dying, since this conveniently explains why they were never seen or mentioned in the series proper.
Netflix Can Only Do So Many Stranger Things Prequels And In-Betweequels
Since Stranger Things season 5 ignored Dustin’s longtime girlfriend, Suzie, it seems possible that the show’s central friend group could just be friends with Nikki between seasons, and she may simply move out of Hawkins before season 3. However, it would still be odd for none of the characters to ever mention her again.
So that the franchise does not get to a point where each new show retcons major details from the original series, Netflix needs to limit the number of interquels and prequels that it adds to the franchise. There is already the prequel play The First Shadow and Tales From ’85, so the next Stranger Things spinoff should focus on new characters.
