Family, friends and colleagues remembered the almost 70 people who died and dozens of those missing in the port of Acapulco this Friday, after one year of Hurricane Otis, in a religious tribute in which they assured that this time has been very difficult in their absence.

At the Yacht Club in Acapulco, with some boats repaired and with the reconstruction of a dock in the background, the archbishop of Acapulco, Leopoldo González, celebrated a mass to pray for all the victims, as well as for the relatives who continue to suffer after the historic cyclone.

With the sound of a trumpet and aboard a boat, the parish priest Marcó Antonio Galeana went to the sea to deliver a floral offering for the eternal rest of the people.

During his message, the archbishop remembered each of the deceased and missing people, while he wished their families to continue searching for God, in addition to urging them to move forward.

The trauma persists after Otis broke the intensification record for a Pacific cyclone on October 25, 2023, when it grew from a tropical storm to a Category 5 hurricane in a record less than 12 hours, surprising Acapulco, one of the main tourist sites in Mexico.

Among the mourners are the mother of young Germán Hernández, Sonia Velázquez, who said that October 24 was her son’s birthday, and now it is the first death anniversary.

He remembered that a year ago he left his house because he had to take care of the boat where he worked, but the last call he had with him was minutes after 11 at night, when he told him that things were already getting ugly and he was very afraid. , so it was better to throw himself into the sea and try to get ahead.

Eight days after the hurricane, their body was found.

After the offering was placed at sea, captains, sailors and family members embraced each other and remembered part of what they experienced a year ago during Hurricane Otis.

The port also suffers because a month ago, on September 23, Guerrero suffered the unexpected blow of Category 3 Hurricane John, something that was not initially predicted and left more than 20 dead in the state.

For this reason, President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that on Sunday she will visit Acapulco to detail what the Government has done for the port.
