OpenAI hires veteran Google executive as VP of corporate development

OpenAI confirmed this Monday the appointment of Albert Lee, senior director of corporate development at Google, as its vice president of corporate development.

Lee will take up the role at Microsoft-backed company OpenAI on Tuesday, reporting to Chief Financial Officer Sarah Friar.

The goal of Lee’s addition is “to ensure we have a senior leader with broad visibility across the company and the ability to act quickly,” an OpenAI spokesperson told Reuters.

At Google (owned by Alphabet), Lee led corporate development for Google Cloud and DeepMind, as well as the strategy and talent search team. Since joining the company in 2011, Lee has worked on more than 60 transactions spanning acquisitions and strategic investments totaling more than $50 billion, according to his LinkedIn profile.

His hire follows OpenAI’s hiring of former Amazon executive Torben Severson as its new vice president and head of global business development last month.

In September, OpenAI hired Mike Liberatore, former CFO of Elon Musk’s xAI, as the AI ​​startup’s chief enterprise finance officer.

Lee also serves on the advisory board of CapitalG, Alphabet’s independent growth fund, which invested in companies such as CrowdStrike and Airbnb.
