OpenAI, the company that created the popular ChatGPT, confirmed its intention to invest in Argentina to develop a large-scale data center, a “pioneer in Latin America” project called ‘Stargate Argentina’.
The company pointed out in a statement in the last few hours that Argentina has “great potential” to host this initiative that, driven by clean energy, seeks to “position the country as a regional and global leader in artificial intelligence.”
According to Sam Altman, its CEO, the project is led by Sur Energy, and follows conversations held last week in Buenos Aires between the Argentine president, Javier Milei, officials from his cabinet and an OpenAI delegation led by the director of Global Affairs, Chris Lehane.
However, the company has not offered figures on the amount of this possible investment, something that contrasts with what was announced by the Milei Office, which spoke of an amount of up to 25,000 million dollars.

OpenAI’s statement simply states that it has signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) to “explore a large-scale data center project in Argentina” with Sur Energy, which will lead the formation of a consortium that would include partnering with a cloud infrastructure developer.
Likewise, Sur Energy seeks to ensure that the data center ecosystem is powered by “safe, efficient and sustainable” sources.
On the other hand, the OpenAI statement indicates that Argentina is entering the era of artificial intelligence (AI) with great momentum, and that its adoption has “more than tripled in the last year”, with a higher rate among adults between 18 and 34 years old.
“Argentina is also among the best Latin American countries for developers who use OpenAI tools. It is a country that not only uses AI, but is developing it,” adds the company.
According to OpenAI, this impulse, added to a growing ecosystem of developers, “makes Argentina the ideal place to build the infrastructure that allows it to unleash its full potential.”
In addition, the company notes that it is also analyzing opportunities to “drive the adoption of AI throughout the country, starting from within the Government itself.”
“ChatGPT has the potential to help Argentine Government employees, as well as administrative and research institutions, optimize their daily work, saving costs and offering better services to Argentine citizens,” he says.
