Ovidio Guzmán López, one of Joaquín’s children “El Chapo” Guzmán, will foreseeably change his statement of guilt tomorrow, Wednesday, in Chicago, after reaching an agreement with the Federal Prosecutors of the United States.

In 2012, the US government included it in the list of international drug traffickers “Kingpin Act” for considering that he played “a relevant role in her father’s activities” and EU until he pointed out that the one known for the nickname “El Mouse” ordered the murder of a “popular Mexican singer” who did not want to go to his wedding.

At first, after being extradited to the US, in 2023, he declared himself not guilty of the five positions against him: conspire to distribute drugs, be part of a criminal company, export narcotics to the United States, make financial transactions with the product of illegal activities and use and unlawfully carry firearms.

However, on June 30, “El Mouse” stamped his signature for the first time in a legal document for the Court of the Southern District of New York in which he declared himself guilty of the crimes that weigh on him.

In the document, in addition, Guzmán López asked to transfer his case to the Court of Illinois, in Chicago, where he is detained right now. Guzmán López faces drug trafficking charges, in addition to Chicago and New York, also in the Columbia district.

With this change of statement, Guzmán López avoids facing a trial and could witness in several investigations, such as open information from the Sinaloa Cartel or about corruption in Mexico, according to Brookings researcher Vanda Felbab-Brown.

Mexico criticizes family transfer from Guzmán López to USA after negotiations

“The mouse”, 35, was known for being one of the ten children of Chapo, but got international fame after the “culiacanazo” of October 17, 2019, when he was arrested but then released by converting the streets of the city of Culiacán into a battlefield.

However, at the beginning of 2023, Guzmán López was captured for the second time in Culiacán, a few days before the visit of the then US president, Joe Biden, for the North American Leaders Summit.

In May, Mexico confirmed that 17 members of the family of the “mouse” – which was not sought by the Mexican authorities – voluntarily delivered to the US authorities as part of a “negotiation” between the Capo and Washington.

Something that President Claudia Sheinbaum questioned when aiming the apparent contradiction of the United States government by “negotiating” with drug trafficker to allow the entry of her family to the US, when that country rejects conversations with terrorists and appointed certain Mexican posters as such.

To this case is added to the voluntary delivery of his brother Joaquín Guzmán López in July 2024, who also faces charges for drug trafficking and negotiates a guilt.

Joaquin arrived in the US on a private flight with Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada, one of Mexico’s most wanted drug traffickers, in what is suspected was a hoax towards Zambada.

Although the circumstances that surrounded that flight were never completely clarified, it seems that Joaquín gave Zambada as part of an agreement with the Prosecutor’s Office.
