Pope Leo XIV said Monday that “no algorithm can never replace a hug, a look, a true encounter”, in a message posted Monday addressed to the young participants of the Youth Festival in Medjugorje, Bosnia, which is celebrated from August 4 to 8.

“Remember: no algorithm can never replace a hug, a look, a true encounter, or with God, with our friends, or with our family,” said the pontiff in his message, dated July 27 in Castel Gandolfo and published Monday by the Vatican.

Leo XIV warned that “we live in an increasingly digital world, where artificial intelligence and technology offer us thousands of opportunities” and encouraged young people to look for “true encounters.”

The pontiff, of American and Peruvian nationality, stressed that “on the path of life is never walking alone” and stressed that “we are made for the encounter, to walk together and discover together a common goal.”

He also encouraged young people to overcome cultural and linguistic barriers and to “meet, meet and share”, within the framework of the festival, which since 1989 brings together every first week of August thousands of young Catholics around the world.

“Following Maria’s example, I encourage you to look for true encounters. Rejoice together, and do not be afraid to cry with whoever cries,” he said.

Finally, he urged the participants to “become announcers of peace and hope” and, if anyone feels “the call to a special vocation”, such as consecrated life or the priesthood, to “not be afraid to respond.”
