The upcoming remake Halo: Campaign Evolved is being supported through other prequel content, including another novel tied to the series. Many Halo novels feature fan-favorite stories, which tend to provide unique adventures or add new context to legendary campaigns told in the games. Halo: Parasite’s Wake is the newest book in the franchise’s history, seeking to provide details before the events of Combat Evolved‘s journey that started it all.
This novel comes after details have already revealed that Halo: Campaign Evolved will include new story missions that take place before Combat Evolved‘s first mission. These prequel levels are rumored to star beloved character Sergeant Johnson, showing events that take place prior to awakening Master Chief aboard the Pillar of Autumn. Considering that these levels are inspired by another book, Parasite’s Eve‘s content could be more important than fans think.
Halo Officially Returns In Parasite’s Wake
Combat Evolved’s Darkest Story Gets More Context Through This Book
Before Campaign Evolved returns players into Master Chief’s adventure across Installation 04, Parasite’s Wake covers events that both the original game and remake only hint at. Arguably the darkest level in the original Combat Evolved was the one where Master Chief encounters the parasitic Flood, a collective of sentient alien spore creatures who can take over the bodies of those they kill.
The zombies that the Flood create are truly terrifying, but they are revealed through an encounter with UNSC Marines. Initially, Master Chief watches a recording of footage from an allied Marine’s helmet, which shows brief scenes of important characters like Captain Keyes being overwhelmed by The Flood in a secret underground facility on the first Halo ring. Parasite’s Wake aims to tell a full story regarding the UNSC’s first contact with the horrors of The Flood.
It is unclear whether the encounter with The Flood will change much in Halo: Campaign Evolved following the release of Halo: Parasite’s Wake. If there is any degree of collaboration between the writer and developers, it is possible that characters or events from the novel may be referenced in the remake.
Written by Tim Lebbon, a bestselling author from the New York Times, this book will follow the point-of-view of the Marines exploring Installation 04. While Master Chief is off on other daring missions, this novel follows new character Staff Sergeant Marvin Mobuto, one of the many Marines scattered from the Pillar of Autumn’s crash landing. The ringworld of Halo is full of dangers, from the Covenant to The Flood that lurks beneath the surface.
The Perfect 25th Anniversary Tribute To Halo: Combat Evolved
A New Story Features Plenty Of Nostalgic References To Fan-Favorite Material
The story of Halo: Parasite’s Wake pays full tribute to the events of Combat Evolved, but with several new twists. According to the book’s official summary, Staff Sergeant Marvin Mobuto must navigate Installation 04 with a crew of survivors from the Pillar of Autumn’s brig, or prison. Rallying control over deserters, drunken messes, and even murderers seems like no easy task, especially with the other dangers present on the ring.
This squad of unlikely companions will have to fend off Covenant forces and eventually the all-consuming Flood as they try to reach the original crash site of the Pillar of Autumn. Given what Halo players know of the fate of the ship in the final moments of Combat Evolved, this story could have a tragic ending. However, the journey it presents could easily play the hits of the original game, while also providing a unique tale placed within the legendary FPS.
As the anniversary date comes closer, fans can expect Halo: Parasite’s Wake to release on September 29, 2026. This could take place before or after the launch of Halo: Campaign Evolved, as the remake’s release date hasn’t been revealed. Regardless, this novel is perfect for long-time fans who desire a great story surrounding Halo: Combat Evolved‘s revered story, which is still remembered fondly as a landmark journey within its genre.
