The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has revealed a surprising addition to the cast – and she’ll having a showdown with none other than Princess Peach. The Super Mario Bros. Movie brought in a multitude of iconic characters from Nintendo’s Super Mario library, but given the size and scope of its universe, many were understandably left on the backburner.

The sequel is poised to expand Mario and Luigi’s world on the big screen even further, with characters like Rosalina, Yoshi and Bowser Jr. entering the picture for the upcoming cosmic adventure. And apparently, Birdo will somehow be along for the ride as well. Based on what was shown in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’s newest trailer, she’ll go up against Princess Peach, even if it’s only briefly.

Birdo In Super Mario Games Explained

Birdo is a fixture of the Super Mario franchise, appearing regularly as a playable character in series such as Mario Kart, Mario Tennis, Mario Party, and more. In these games, she often comes across as one of the group, but her history is a bit more complex. The pink, female dinosaur has a history as both an ally to the heroes and an enemy.

Making her video game debut in 1988’s Super Mario Bros. 2, Birdo appeared as a miniboss that Mario, Luigi, Toad, and Peach had to defeat multiple times on their way to defeat the main villain of the story, Wart. She was featured as a boss in other games too, such as Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars.

Interestingly, she’s also had more amicable appearances in the Super Mario franchise, appearing friendly to Mario in games like Mario & Luigi: Brothership.

What Birdo’s Role In The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Could Be

All things considered, Birdo’s role is far less defined than it is with Bowser and Bowser Jr. With that in mind, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie may have a certain degree of freedom when it comes to where she could fit into the story. She could be a secondary antagonist, or fill a different role entirely.

The fact that she’s shown doing battle with Princess Peach in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie trailer indicates she will indeed serve as a villain, but it’s at least possible that this fight will be the result of a misunderstanding. As for what world she’ll be a part of, it could be that Birdo ties in with the movie’s cosmic setting.

The trailers show that while Mario and Luigi will likely enter outerspace eventually, it’s Peach’s storyline that will call for much of the movie’s cosmic exploration. It could be that Birdo will be one of the characters she’ll meet in her travels. Depending on how her fight ends, Birdo may wind up on her side in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’s final battle.
