Pemex reports that it continues working to determine the cause of the incident in Deer Park

Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) reported that the team at the Deer Park refinery, in Texas, continues to work closely with federal, state and local agencies that are following up on the incident that occurred last week and determining the cause that originated it.

The oil company indicated that since October 10, the date on which the gas leak at the Deer Park refinery was announced, it has continued with follow-up actions to the incident, which was completely controlled; In addition, the site was declared safe to resume activities that same day.

It should be remembered that the incident left two people dead and more than 30 injured.

This event involved the release of hydrogen sulfide from the Amine Regeneration Unit at the refinery, which lasted only a few minutes. The gas release occurred during the execution of maintenance activities in that process unit and containment efforts began immediately.

Pemex said refinery equipment blocked the line and significantly reduced emissions in about an hour. Gas release from process equipment was mitigated and stopped within approximately three hours.

He assured that in accordance with safety protocols, three different burners were used in the complex with the purpose of controlling and completely reducing the release of gases. The estimate of air emissions during the total event was reported on October 11 through the State of Texas Electronic Environmental Reporting System (STEERS).

Additionally, the company added, air quality was closely monitored during this event for hydrogen sulfide and sulfur dioxide compounds and no off-site impacts were detected throughout the incident. Air monitoring readings at the refinery perimeter were zero for these compounds.
