Pemex reported that the average number of wells in operation fell 8.8% until the third quarter of 2025, going from 6,395 in the same period of 2024 to 5,832, a reduction of 563 wells, according to data collected by the media this Monday.
As a consequence, Pemex’s production objectives for this year of around 1.8 million barrels per day are complicated.
The decrease coincided with lower well completion activity, as Pemex completed 20 wells between July and September 2025, compared to 33 in the same period of 2024; Of them, 16 were development (11 less than a year before) and four were exploratory (two less), according to corporate information.

By type of operation, the annexes to the report detail that the wells associated with crude oil decreased from 3,822 to 3,489 (8.7% less), while those linked to non-associated gas went from 2,573 to 2,343 (8.9% less).
In the same report, Pemex reported that crude oil production averaged 1,648 million barrels per day (mbd) in the third quarter of 2025, a year-on-year drop of 116 mbd, which it attributed to the natural decline in fields such as Quesqui, Tupilco Profundo, Zaap and Maloob.
In addition, it attributed the decline to greater operational complexity in high-pressure and high-temperature wells, infrastructure delays in Xanab and Quesqui and atypical weather conditions that temporarily affected offshore operations.
The company also noted that the entry into operation of the Bakté field and new wells in Ixachi helped partially mitigate the decline, in line with its land production strategy.
