The former president Enrique Peña Nieto expressed his regret for the death of Pope Francis, whom he described as a “social leader” worried the causes of the most needy and recoded that during his government, in February 2016, he received it in a state visit.
“With deep regret, I’m sorry for Pope Francis. My deepest condolences to the Church, the Catholic community and the entire world for the loss of a social leader concerned about the causes of the most needy,” said Peña Nieto in a message on the social network X.
“I had the honor of receiving it in Mexico in its state visit, where it made an intense pilgrimage carrying a message of faith, love and fraternity to all Mexicans. Rest in peace,” he added.

During his stay in the country, Pope Francis denounced that the search for privileges leads to corruption and violence.
“His visit transcends the encounter between two states. This is the encounter of a people with their faith,” Peña Nieto told the Pontiff at the welcome ceremony held at the National Palace.
Peña Nieto, of the PRI, also attended publicly, and communed, the Mass that the Pope officiated in the emblematic Basilica of Guadalupe.
Francisco, the first Latin American Pope visited Mexico from February 12 to 17, 2016, a trip in which he highlighted his meeting with the indigenous communities of Chiapas and the border with the United States in Ciudad Juárez, where he officiated a binational mass and defended the migrants.
