Zeckendorf Development and Eyal Ofer’s Global Holdings finally traded a duplex penthouse at 50 United Nations Plaza — though at a steep discount.
The sale of the 9,700-square-foot apartment closed last week for $28.5 million, The Real Deal has learned. The final price is $10 million lower than the condo’s last asking price when it snagged a signed contract in August 2024. It’s also significantly less than the $70 million it sought when the developers launched sales in 2013.
The condo spans the 42nd and 43rd floors and has four bedrooms, seven bathrooms and two staff rooms. It also features a terrace, views of the East River and a 33-foot swimming pool.
A team with Zeckendorf Marketing led sales at the building, while Douglas Elliman’s Jessica Levine brought the buyer.
Spokespeople for the developers did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Levine declined to comment on the sale.
William and Arthur Zeckendorf bought the site for $160 million in 2007, though construction on the 88-unit building stalled for years after the sale due to the Great Recession. The tower, designed by Foster + Partners, was completed in 2015. It includes amenities such as a fitness center, pool and children’s playroom.
The developers initially targeted a sellout above $710 million, but by 2020, that was lowered to around $640 million. At the time, the city was saturated with new development condos, leaving many to languish on the market while others remained unlisted and vacant.
The building, across the street from the United Nations’ Visitors Services wing and just a few blocks away from its headquarters, has attracted a number of diplomats and foreign dignitaries.
In 2020, the nation of Kuwait dropped $16.1 million on an apartment at the building to serve as the private residence of the country’s New York-based consul general, Hamad Al-Hazeem. The year prior, the British Consulate-General in New York also paid about $16 million for a condo on the 38th floor, while the Permanent Mission of the State of Qatar shelled out $45 million for four units in 2015.
Other notable buyers at the tower include the former president of Kohl’s, Jay Baker, and his wife, Pat, who bought a penthouse on the 39th floor in 2019. The couple paid $16 million.
