The Mexican Institute of Industrial Property (IMPI) reported that in the little less than three months of President Claudia Sheinbaum’s administration, 326,284 pieces of illegal merchandise have been seized, with a value of 75.6 million pesos.
The general director of IMPI, Santiago Nieto, pointed out that to this amount must be added the goods seized in the recent operation carried out in Sonora in approximately an area of 10,000 square meters of pieces of foreign origin.
Governor Alfonso Durazo specified that the amount of insured merchandise amounts to 150 million pesos.
Nieto highlighted brands that are emulated in the seized merchandise: Mattel, Gillette, Disney, Nintendo, LEGO, SACM, Sanrio and Egeda, among others.
“We must remember that they are legally established brands in Mexico that generate work for Mexicans. Every time the acquisition or entry of a product is committed through smuggling, through piracy, in our country, the workers of Mexico are being particularly affected,” he said at a press conference to give details of the operation in Hermosillo.
The official added that so far during the administration, 110 inspection visits have also been carried out to corroborate the use of licensed computer programs, of which 29 have been in Mexico City, 22 in Nuevo León, 17 in the State of Mexico and the rest in other states.
“On the issue of copyright, 600 inspection visits have been carried out to verify the illicit use of musical and audiovisual works when there is no authorization from the rights holders and due to signal theft issues. At this point in particular, internet accounts that have been illegally disseminating material have been blocked,” he added.
Santiago Nieto also mentioned that since October measures have been taken at the customs of Michoacán and Colima, where products with a value of more than one million pesos have been seized.
