The Civic Data Organization on Monday warned of a 25% increase in political violence in Mexico during March, the first month of the campaigns towards the judicial elections of June 1.
In March 2025, the NGO documented 50 cases of violence exercised by organized crime groups against people linked to the political sphere, 25% more compared to the 40 records of February, according to the most recent update of the report ‘Voting between bullets’.
“The most affected states were Guanajuato (8), Sinaloa (8), Guerrero (6), Morelos (5) and Veracruz (5),” the organization said.
In Morelos, the NGO documented threats aimed at judging persons, attributed to the criminal and drug trafficker organization known as the Michoacan family.
“It was the placement of a narcomanta (Drug trafficking message) in which three magistrates of the Superior Court of Justice (TSJ) were threatened, who were accused of having released two alleged hitmen involved in an attack in the town of Anenecuilco at the beginning of the month,” said the organization.

While in Veracruz, Data Civic registered two attacks directed against candidates for mayors, who withdrew from the electoral contest various violent events and threats.
“In Veracruz, political-deminal violence has forced two candidates to renounce the next electoral process in the entity, where 221 local positions will be voted,” the NGO warned.
Along with the judicial elections in June, this year the states of Veracruz and Durango will also celebrate local elections.
Finally, the organization recapitulated that, according to its count, from 2018 to 2025, 2,410 attacks, murders, attacks and threats against people associated with the political, governmental sphere or against government facilities or parties have been recorded.
Civic Data said that 2024 has been the year with more events of political-deminal violence, with 661 cases, compared to 2023, which closed with 570.
In just over a month, on June 1, 2025, Mexico will have its first election to the Judiciary, when a record of 99.7 million voters are called to choose for the first time 881 positions of between 3,422 candidates, which include the Supreme Court, the new court of judicial discipline and the Electoral Court.

The campaigns began on March 30 and will end on May 28, with opposition alerts, international organizations such as the UN, current judges and civil associations of a possible interference of the Executive and organized crime in the elections.
