Pope Francis thanked the members of the medical team who saved his life on Wednesday during a five -week hospitalization for a serious case of double pneumonia, speaking quietly but breathing without oxygen at a meeting in the Vatican.
The Supreme Pontiff, 88, is gradually making more public appearances while recovering from the largest health crisis in his 12 years in office. Today morning, he met with about 70 doctors and staff of the Gemelli Hospital in Rome, where he was treated for 38 days.
“Thank you for your hospital service,” said the Holy Father with a soft and hoarse voice. “It’s very good. Keep it up.”
As in his last public appearance, on Sunday, the Pope did not use oxygen.
