The president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, said that his government will not allow more repatriations of Colombians handcuffed from the United States, looking for a more dignified and human treatment for deported migrants.
In an interview with Univisión, Petro proposed that Colombia be responsible for organizing the transfer of the deportees, either through hired flights or even cruises, thus avoiding the inappropriate conditions that have occurred on previous occasions.
Petro also raised the possibility of making a popular consultation in Colombia to define the conditions under which the deportees would be received.
In addition, the Colombian government asked Panama and the United States to reprogram deportation flights scheduled for February 3, 2025, seeking to improve coordination and ensure adequate treatment to migrants.

The South American president called on undocumented Colombians in the US to return to the country, offering support through a productive credits program of the Department of Social Prosperity (DPS) for those who register in their initiatives.
This statement occurred in the midst of a diplomatic crisis with the US, which recently implied Colombia’s rejection to allow the landing of US military planes with deportees.
Although the situation was resolved, Petro has reaffirmed its commitment to a more respectful repatriation process.
