Although Good Omens season 3 hasn’t been released yet, the Prime Video show is already a classic of its genre. It is hard to get fantasy comedy right, especially on the small screen. Fantasy shows require big budgets, immersive worldbuilding, and a tone that is self-serious enough to make viewers care about fantastical creatures like dragons and elves.
In contrast, comedy shows can’t take themselves too seriously and live or die based on how playful, light-hearted, and purely fun they feel. As such, comedy fantasy shows have to be both dramatic and funny, both silly and serious, and both impactful and irreverent. While HBO’s His Dark Materials can be brooding and ominous, fantasy comedy has to prioritize fun.
Good Omens Is A Perfect Blend of Fantasy and Comedy
Fortunately, Prime Video’s BBC co-production Good Omens struck this balance with an ingenious story that manages to make existential stakes hilarious. The show follows David Tennant’s demon Crowley and Michael Sheen’s angel Aziraphel as the pair discover that Armageddon is on its way, much to their shared chagrin. Both the angel and devil have built themselves comfortable existences on earth.
As such, Crowley and Aziraphel make a pact to try and stall this long-foretold battle between Heaven and Hell so they can continue to enjoy their comfortable life of luxury on Earth. This proves difficult thanks to a sprawling cast of heroes, villains, demons, angels, humans, and assorted other characters who soon get in the pair’s way.
Good Omens Has One Of Fantasy TV’s Most Impressive Casts Ever
Tennant and Sheen’s chemistry is superb, and the pair could hold down the show on their own with their witty repartee. However, their perfect triumvirate is rounded out by Jon Hamm’s archangel Gabriel, as well as the rest of Good Omens’ superb supporting cast.
There is comedy icon Nick Offerman as Thaddeus Dowling, Frances McDormand as God, the show’s narrator, and Anna Maxwell Martin and Shelley Conn as Beelzebub. A slew of other actors appear in supporting roles, from Benedict Cumberbatch to Derek Jacobi to Jack Whitehall to Mark Gatiss to Brian Cox.
This amounts to one of the most impressive casts ever assembled for a fantasy series, but the supporting stars are more than just additions to the cast list. Everyone gets a chance to shine in the anarchic story of Good Omens, a twisty mystery that introduces a slew of new characters with each new chapter of Crowley and Aziraphale’s misadventure.
Good Omens Season 3 Can Still Have A Satisfying Ending
While the show was already acclaimed by the time its second season ended, Good Omens season 3 has been mired in controversy since 2024. That year, the co-author of the show’s source novel and its showrunner, disgraced writer Neil Gaiman, was accused of sexual abuse and assault by numerous women spanning decades.
As a result, the planned third season was cut down to a single episode, which is set to be released in May 2026. Fortunately for fans of the show, the series has already told most of its self-contained story, so the fact that the conclusion of Good Omens has been cut short is unlikely to have major ramifications for its narrative.
