Citadel season 2 finally gets an update.

Created by Josh Appelbaum, Bryan Oh, and David Weil, and executive produced by the Russo brothers, Amazon’s spy thriller show premiered in 2023. Citadel season 2 was promptly confirmed, and two international spinoffs followed, both of which were subsequently cancelled, raising questions about the flagship series.

In a recent interview with The Playlist, star Priyanka Chopra-Jonas affirms that Citadel season 2 has been filmed and is still on the way. She also quashes rumors that season 2 experienced substantial reshoots to incorporate characters and plot threads from cancelled spinoffs Citadel: Diana and Citadel: Honey Bunny. Check out Chopra-Jonas’ comment below:

“No, I don’t think there were major changes. I think we picked up where we left off in season one. But there were incredible additions, which you will see coming up. Joe Russo directed most of it himself as well. So having his expertise on the set was just great.”

Citadel season 1 was met with lukewarm reviews. The show, which follows the ongoing battle in the shadows between the Citadel spy agency and the terrorist syndicate Manticore, was criticized for feeling relatively generic, and it currently sports only a 51% on Rotten Tomatoes.

This lackluster critical response was accompanied by strong viewership, but the show’s exorbitant price tag raised questions about whether this viewership was enough for Citadel to be considered a success. The six-episode season 1 has a reported budget of about $300 million, suggesting Amazon was counting on the series to be a massive, franchise-starting hit.

So far, that hasn’t really happened. Diana and Honey Bunny, the show’s Italian and Indian spinoffs, respectively, fared better with critics than the flagship series, but neither caught on with viewers enough to justify a season 2.

Citadel season 2 is expected to arrive this summer after filming reportedly wrapped in November 2024, speaking to the rocky road to release the sophomore outing has faced. There’s been no word on a season 3, but it’s possible that the series, which also stars Richard Madden and Stanley Tucci, will be quietly cancelled or given a truncated series order to wrap the story up.

Season 2 is expected to pick up roughly a month after the Citadel season 1 ending. Mason (Madden) and Nadia (Chopra-Jonas) are being hunted by Manticore agents, and they’ll have to work together to take down a Brazilian billionaire named Paulo Braga.

If Citadel is to continue, it will likely do so with a smaller budget. The series is a product of the “peak TV” era and the streaming boom, but TV budgets are now contracting once more, raising questions about where the Prime Video series fits into the current TV landscape.
