Prime Video’s Tomb Raider series starring Sophie Turner has hit a setback.
The Game of Thrones star is playing the iconic Lara Croft in the upcoming series developed by Phoebe Waller-Bridge. On January 15, Prime Video released the first official image of Turner as the character, along with announcing that production was officially underway. While there have been many Tomb Raider movies, shows, and video games, this marks the first time that the franchise has had a live-action series.
Now, Amazon MGM Studios has shared a statement with Entertainment Weekly that “Sophie Turner recently experienced a minor injury. As a precaution, production has briefly paused to allow her time to recover. We look forward to resuming production as soon as possible.”
Amazon MGM Studios’ statement confirms that Turner’s injury was minor and that filming is only being paused temporarily, with her ready to continue playing the role once she recovers. No release date or release window has been announced yet for the series, so it is unclear if this change to the production schedule will impact when the show debuts.
Previously, the role of Lara Croft was famously played by Angelina Jolie in the live-action movies Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and Lara Croft: The Cradle of Life. In the 2018 live-action Tomb Raider movie, Alicia Vikander played the protagonist. As for Netflix’s animated series Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft, the character was voiced by Hayley Atwell. The Legend of Lara Croft ran for two seasons, the last of which ended the show.
The Tomb Raider cast joining Turner in the new Prime Video show features Sigourney Weaver, Jason Isaacs, Martin Bobb-Semple, Bill Paterson, Celia Imrie, and Paterson Joseph. Waller-Bridge is the co-showrunner alongside Chad Hodge, who was one of the creators of the television series Wayward Pines. Dmitri M. Joseph produces via Story Kitchen after working on the Sonic the Hedgehog films. Waller-Bridge has played prominent roles in Fleabag, Solo: A Star Wars Story, and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, and has worked as a writer and producer on Fleabag and Killing Eve.
Prior to her injury and filming Tomb Raider, Sophie Turner’s post-Game of Thrones career recently included leading roles in Prime Video’s crime thriller series Steal and the Gothic horror film The Dreadful. The latter project saw her reuniting with Game of Thrones co-star Kit Harington, but instead of playing family as they did with Sansa Stark and Jon Snow, they played old friends who become lovers. Turner has also portrayed a young Jean Grey in X-Men: Apocalypse and Dark Phoenix and the titular character in the crime drama series Joan.
