Between 10% and 20% of the cost of agri-food products corresponds to payments demanded by criminal groups, an unsustainable situation, stated the National Agricultural Council (CNA) after regretting the murder of the lemon leader of Apatzingán, Bernardo Bravo.

The organization denounced that the high levels of extortion and threats that farmers face already have a direct impact on the price of food.

“Organized crime, extortion, threats and murders cannot continue to condition the activity of those who work the land every day,” he said in a statement.

On the day of the events, Bravo was accompanied by an escort during the journey between Morelia and Apatzingán, who protected him until he entered the interior of the Tianguis Limonero, where he no longer had personnel for his protection, the federal government reported based on data from the Michoacán administration.

“The Secretariat of State Security reported that Bernardo Bravo had three security elements at his disposal to protect him. In addition, he was assigned an armored vehicle,” the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection stated in an information card.

Bernardo Bravo was known for leading demonstrations in recent months due to organized crime extortions against the lemon sector.
