The gross value added (GVA) of the public sector in Mexico grew by 0.3% annually in 2023 to exceed 4.44 trillion pesos (about 230,171 million dollars), equivalent to 14.8% of the national economy, revealed this Monday the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi).
Of this value, the general government grew 0.4% annually in real terms to represent 51.6% of the sector’s GVA, while public companies advanced 0.2%.
Workers in the public sector increased by 0.3% annually to 5.95 million positions, of which 92.8% correspond to the general government and the remaining 7.2% to public companies.
The production of the public sector, the report added, was 6.91 trillion pesos (more than 358,216 million dollars), of which 38.9% were from state energy companies and 9.7% from public companies in other areas.
The remaining 51.4% was contributed by the General Government, with 23.7% of the national total coming from legislative and governmental activities, the administration of justice and international and extraterritorial organizations.
While 13.8% were from educational services, 12.7% from health and social assistance services, and the remaining 1.2% from other activities.

In addition, the value of public sector construction in 2023 was 833,344 million pesos (about 43,200.8 million dollars), which represents 17.6% of national construction.
Of this amount, 23.6% was for works related to mining, 18.9% for works for the supply of water, oil, gas, electrical energy and telecommunications, and 10.4% for the division of land and construction of urbanization works. .
While 14.1% was for the construction of communication roads, 13.5% for non-residential construction, 16.8% for other civil engineering constructions, 1.8% for specialized construction work and the remaining 0.8% for residential construction.
The figures reflect the behavior of Mexico’s economy, which grew 0.2% quarterly and 2.1% year-on-year in the second quarter of 2024, accumulating an increase of 1.8% in the year after growing 3.2% in 2023.
