The president of Russia, Vladimir Putin, promised this Friday to guarantee life and decent treatment of Ukrainian soldiers surrounded by Russian troops in the Kursk region, as asked by the American leader, Donald Trump.
“In case they depose weapons and surrender, life and decent treatment will be guaranteed in accordance with the norms of international law,” said Kremlin head at a telematic meeting with members of the Russian Security Council.
Putin said that Russia “understands” the request of a humanitarian nature that Trump made, although he accused the Ukrainian military of “multiple crimes against the civilian population” of Kursk, that kyiv’s troops invaded in August 2024 and where Moscow has launched a great offensive in recent weeks, recovering large portions of territory.
At the same time, he stressed that for the “effective” compliance of Trump’s call it is necessary that the political-military dome of Ukraine order the entrenched troops in Kursk depose the weapons and surrender.
As for relations with Washington, Putin, who dedicated this meeting with the Security Council to the restoration of ties with the US, said that “the situation has begun to change.”
“We’ll see what comes out of this,” he said.
Putin willing to cease fire
The American president said Friday that his government’s conversations with Putin were “very good and productive” and declared that there are “very good possibilities” that the “horrible and bloody war in Ukraine comes to an end.
At the same time, he stressed that “at this time, thousands of Ukrainian soldiers are completely surrounded by the Russian army and in a very bad and vulnerable position.”
“I have firmly asked President Putin to save those lives. This would be a horrible massacre, one that has not been seen since World War II. God bless you all! ”He wrote on his social truth network.
Meanwhile, the former president and deputy of the Russian Security Council, Dmitri Medvedev, warned today that “the next few hours” will be key to show the choice of kyiv.
“In case of refusing to depose the weapons, all of them (the fenced troops) will be consistently and mercilessly eliminated,” he wrote in Telegram.
On Thursday, an American delegation headed by the special envoy of the White House, Steve Witkoff, met in Moscow with Putin to treat the offer of a high fire of 30 days with Ukraine, agreed this week in Saudi Arabia between Washington and kyiv.
Putin stressed that he is in favor of the truce, but warned that he sees problems in his application and verification and considered desirable to speak with his American counterpart.
