Candidates linked to religious sects, with accusations for corruption or sexual crimes are among the most voted profiles in the unprecedented judicial election in Mexico, criticized by the lack of filters and promoted by the ruling that projects a strong influence on the justice system.

Although only one in 10 Mexicans went to the polls in the first popular election of the Judiciary -with an estimated participation of 13% and more than 10% of null votes -, the electoral authority is heading to validate in the next few days the triumph of hundreds of new judges, magistrates and ministers of the Supreme Court that will come into functions on September 1.

Among the aspiring more votes are at least three members of the Church La Luz del Mundo, led by Naasón Joaquín García, a prisoner for sexual abuse of minors in the United States, where he still faces charges for possession of child sexual content, in addition to open research in Mexico for trafficking in persons and money laundering.

At the end of the calculation of the votes by the National Electoral Institute (INE) on June 12, Madián Sinaí Menchaca Sierra, daughter of Bishop Nicolás Menchaca, who leads the Church after the arrest of Naasón Joaquín, is emerging to become a federal administrative judge in the western western of Jalisco, cradle of world light, where he obtained 43,493 votes.

While Eluzai Rafael Aguilar, daughter of the Minister of Cult, Samuel Rafael Quintana, accumulates 62,671 votes to become a federal criminal judge in Jalisco.

For its part, Salma Jaanai Martínez Macías is the most voted candidate for Federal Criminal Judge in Coahuila (North) and has publicly recognized her militancy in the world’s light, which she has expressed in her social networks, “it is a pride.”

Criminal history and serious complaints

They also highlight names linked to serious crimes, such as Carmen Alejandra Lozano Maya, accused of torture and extortion, who obtained more than 44,000 votes to be a criminal judge in the Superior Court of Justice of Mexico City.

According to local media, Lozano Maya adds at least two formal complaints of torture, sexual abuse and extortion in illegal operations when he was an agent of the Public Ministry in the State of Mexico, a position he held for almost two decades until 2020.

Another alarming profile is that of Hernán Jesús Vega Burgos, elected magistrate in the Superior Court of Justice of Yucatan, with about 115,000 votes, denounced in 2009 for his alleged participation in a network of trafficking and sexual exploitation of foreign women.

Finally, Tania Contreras López is emerging to become president of the Supreme Court of Justice of Tamaulipas, with more than 217,000 votes, although she faces a complaint before the Mexican Prosecutor’s Office for influence peddling and criminal association related to a network of corruption and huachicol (adulterated alcoholic beverage).

Despite the promise to renew justice in Mexico with the judicial reform promoted by President Claudia Sheinbaum, NGOs and activists have denounced that the lack of filters has opened the door to risky profiles for the justice system.

Although the INE said that the triumph of candidates with “proven” criminal history has not yet clearly defined this mechanism, while officially validating the results next week.

Meanwhile, the official party National Regeneration Movement (Morena) has managed to impose its candidates in the main courts, such as the Mexican Supreme and the nascent Judicial Discipline Court (TDJ), which will monitor all the country’s judges.
