Rent a chicken, a booming fashion in the US in the face of the price of eggs

Americans have been buying eggs for a few years without knowing well what their final price will be. Fed up with these changes, some chose to look for alternatives to these fluctuations such as having their own chickens.

That is just what “Rent the Chickn” is dedicated, a company created in 2013 on the outskirts of Pittsburgh (Pennsylvania) that offers its customers the rental of between two and four birds of corral for their homes so that they have fresh eggs every day. No price changes.

Jenn Tompkins, co -founder of the company, responds resounding if it has noticed an increase in the number of customers in recent months: “Of course,” he says.

“When people rent one of our chickens, they know for sure that you don’t have to worry about the price of eggs, or scarcity, or if there are purchase limitations. They just have to go out to their patio and pick them up,” he adds.

Since the end of 2022, the price of eggs in the US was registering a progressive increase caused by an avian flu outbreak for which more than 100 million laying hens have been sacrificed.

According to the Office of Labor Statistics, the price of eggs reached a first peak in January 2023, under the mandate of Democrat Joe Biden (2021-2025), but it was in February of this year, under Donald Trump, when he broke all records when he reached 5.89 dollars.

However, the Trading Economics portal (which already offers the data of March) ensures that earlier this month cost more than 8 dollars.

Trump, who assumed the position in January, has charged countless occasions against his predecessor holding him the problem.

‘Rent the Chickn’ offers its chickens in at least 35 US markets

Although the Department of Agriculture ensures that the price is already in more normal values, over 3 dollars, these changes, the purchase limits of some supermarkets and that often they were not found on store shelves have made citizens look for solutions.

And many of them, according to the co -founder of “Rent The Chickn”, chose to “open the door to all the benefits” offered by these birds, beyond the economic ones.

“Fresh eggs have less cholesterol than stores. But also, chickens act as therapy. They can help interact with neighbors when they go out to the patio, and separate children from the screens, teaching them to take care of an animal,” he says.

The company offers its services in 35 important markets in the country and in others in Canada, although, as progress, these weeks will increase even more.

Where they succeed is in Pittsburgh, in Connecticut and in Toronto (Canada), and although it could be a good option for those who live in large cities, where life is traditionally more expensive, it regrets that it is not a good alternative for the people who reside in flats.

They offer from the simplest package, which is around 500 dollars for the six months of rent, consisting of the chicken coop, two birds, food and transportation to home, to more complete ones, which exceed $ 1,000, in which more animals and other extras are added.

The normal thing is that the choice of the package varies depending on how many people live at home, since, according to two chickens they put approximately “a dozen eggs a week.”

Tompkins explains that. Although some schools have joined the initiative, it is thought more for single -family units.

“They are very happy,” he says about their customers.

In addition, he is not worried that the rebound they have registered with the problem with the supply of the eggs will now be reversed that the situation seems to improve.

“I sincerely believe that we are going to continue renting chickens,” he says. “It allows you to have less food insecurities and have food near our table and be less dependent on stores.”
