(Reuters) – Kentucky police reported an “active shooter situation” in which “multiple people” were shot in traffic near Interstate-75 in London, Kentucky, on Saturday evening.

The incident began just before 6:00 p.m. (1000 GMT), about 9 miles outside of London, when officers reported shots fired at several vehicles on Interstate 75 in Laurel County, multiple media accounts said. The shots were reported to have come from a wooded area or an overpass.

“Please avoid I-75 around Ex 49. Until further notice! Take an alternate route, don’t be anywhere in that area,” London Mayor Randall Weddle said on Facebook (NASDAQ:).

Police officials said the suspect has not been arrested.

“The suspect has not been apprehended at this time and we urge people to stay inside,” Kentucky State Trooper Scottie Pennington wrote on Facebook.

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear wrote in X: “Kentucky, we are aware of a shooting on I-75 in Laurel County. Please avoid the area. We will provide more detailed information once they are available.”

He also asked residents to “pray for everyone involved.”

London is a small town of about 8,000 residents about 100 miles northwest of Frankfort, the state capital.
