resignation in the square and willing to vote for the new Pope

The second black fumata of the current conclave, after the second and third vote, has been welcomed with resignation in the Plaza de San Pedro and with people willing to return in the afternoon to see if it is possible to attend the event of the election of the Pope.

On Thursday morning the square registered about 10,000 people, including faithful and curious, a significantly lower than 30,000 that last night they also waited for the white smoke from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel.

A group of Spanish from Llanes, in Asturias, who make a cruise, landed this morning in the port of Civitavecchia and went directly to the Vatican.

His arrival coincided precisely with the black smoking, which was seen in the background while they took a group photo.

Among them was Juan Manuel, who has not been surprised by the second black smoke: “It cannot be so soon” (the choice of the Pope), while Ana Maria is convinced of the next “is not going to be Spanish” and it is enough to follow Francisco’s humanist and conciliatory “wake”.

A couple of Salvadorans, Nataly and Fernando also went to the square, whose trip to Italy was scheduled for a month, with the particularity that he has coincided with the conclave, so they have approached San Pedro, although the smoke has been black.

“We plan to return for the afternoon vote because it is a special event,” he says to Efe, while the man ratifies that intention: “We have to take advantage, perhaps in the afternoon we can witness this luxury, hopefully it is,” he says in reference to the hypothetical choice of the pontiff.

Nataly says he enjoyed, although he has not seen the new Pope: “He feels the fervor of all people to the expectation of what happens and a superbon atmosphere.”

There are those who, however, are not so clear that they can return, like three Spaniards who attend these days a teacher training course on cultural issues, since in the morning they have free, but in the afternoon they must go to class.

Mónica, from Santander, is convinced that the new Pope will be known on the afternoon of this Thursday and tells Efe that being present in San Pedro interests him as a historical event, not so much religious.

In addition, he has already been at other historical moments: “I had a coup d’etat in Thailand, the 11-S in the United States … When the Pope died he could not believe it,” he explains.

More interested in the religious fact are his companions of Blanca, de Cuenca, and María, of Tomelloso, who have their ideas about what the next Pope can contribute.

“I hope that the new Pope opens the mind a little more to the issues that Pope Francis began in the word and that they really begin to see changes in the church,” says Blanca, while Maria corroborates: “I only hope there are more facts, more changes, not only words and promises. That the Pope who now touches puts the woman in a more protagonist role.”

While the black smoke dissipates in the air, faithful and curious are removed and the flow of pilgrims continues that, between prayers and carrying crosses, advance by some lanes expressly enabled for those who want to cross the Holy Gate of San Pedro and win the jubilee.
