Resisting unnecessary change is business intelligence

Resisting change seems foolishness. In a world in which words innovation, transformation, impulse are an essential part of corporate slang, thinking in the opposite direction is difficult to elaborate in a first instance. However, perhaps going against the countercurrent from time to time not so bad idea. The resistance to change a defense mechanism that manifests itself in fear of losing something that I have, so, I take back, I move away or become a wall of contention. There will be those who think that this resistance is an attack on progress and analyze whether or not it is a feature of intelligence.

Resisting unnecessary change is a concept that is worth reflecting. They have told us so much that ideas transform and in the fantasy of innovation, one imagines all ways in which personal life, business operations, professional scopes will be transformed. We think that each update will be larger and striking so it will become an automatic improvement. And, it is not necessarily so. Many changes are not for good and in the era of social acceleration, we do not take the time to justify whether a modification is needed or not, whether to be well accepted by the market or not, if it will help us generate profits or rather subtract .

I loved reading a Melissa Kirsch article about Alexandre Kantoow’s French pianist. It is a rising star in the classical world that with its twenty -seven years, has already won important awards. They will surely locate it if I tell them that it is the artist who touched the piano in the rain at the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympic Games and is ready to make his debut in the Los Angeles Philharmonic. What caught Kantorow’s attention is the commitment to maintain his life and his equal work practices, even when he seems destined for fame, even when fans gather out of his performances with posters that ask for seats, he wants continue the same as always.

“I really don’t like changes and unnecessary changes in life,” Kantorow told Kirsch. It is magnificent, dispensing with the unnecessary is pure wisdom. Why change what is working and give good results? This unique pianist has had the same manager and professor since he was 16 years old and continues in his small record label. One would think that it is resistance to change, however, when listening to Kantorow’s last album, – a collection of Brahms and Schubert pieces – we will realize that it is not that. He simply does not see the need to change what works for him.

In addition, it is important to reflect how the commitment to maintain stable things links the production of an artist and, in this condition, how we can extrapolate this to business, corporate and professional life. Many times we do not stop to think about the ways in which the efficiency of our actions will be altered by the changes that are proposed. Unnecessary changes, modifications that will not add and could subtract.

Kirsch account that recently saw Shine a Lightthe Martin Scorsese concert film about the performances of the Rolling Stones at the Beacon Theater in New York in 2006. The intimate way in which the film is filmed, makes you feel that you are on stage, closely watching the artists make art. “You forget that you are seeing one of the most successful rock bands in history, that these people have touched these songs a million times, which are basically unknowable in their fame and wealth and in the way the world Consider. Thus, as they do and have always done things, they feel comfortable, in a known, almost cozy accessible environment ”concludes Kirsch.

The idea that there is something fundamentally stable, independent of external forces, makes sense. This sense of harmony fosters a safe environment, which allows experiencing, innovating, correcting and changing. It is from this state of grace that it can continue to be accessible to the market.

Of course, consumers also appreciate this stability. That security, since complaints and accusations are well known that companies love to abandon their identity and change beyond the recognition and loyalty of their customers. Despite how annoying this should be for a consumer, there are companies that forget their origins and stop assessing something as wonderful as having a customer base that want to stay faithful, that they love so much what they buy that they believe is the elementary part of them and who want to help save it.

Actually, if we think well, we will realize that we do this with the people we know in depth. We provide them with a mirror that reflects the person we love. The challenge, in the business world – and in life – is to allow companies to transform and experience while we trust that the essence we adore is basically insusstitutable, which will be there, that it will not go anywhere, No matter how much change we choose or resist. In short, unnecessary change is synonymous with folly, resistance to this type of change is business intelligence.
