Donald Trump’s government is considering imposing tariffs on foreign electronic devices based on the number of chips contained in each device, according to three people familiar with the matter, since it intends that companies transfer the manufacture to the United States.

According to the plan, which has not been previously informed and that could change, the trade department would impose a tariff to the product imported equal to a percentage of the estimated value of the chips content of the article.

If implemented, the plan would show that the Trump administration is trying to hit a wide range of consumer products, from toothbrushes to laptops, which could accelerate inflation while seeking to boost US manufacturing.

The Commerce Department did not immediately respond to requests for comments.

“The United States cannot depend on foreign imports for semiconductor products that are essential for our national and economic security,” said White House spokesman Kush Desai, when asked about the details.

“The Trump administration is implementing a nuanced and multifaceted approach to relocate the critical manufacture of the United States with tariffs, tax cuts, deregulation and abundance of energy.”
