The Reuters news agency maintained its report on the alleged pressure from the United States to investigate politicians with alleged links with organized crime, after President Claudia Sheinbaum rejected the version during her morning press conference this Thursday.

Sheinbaum described the “Fake News” note and questioned the moment in which it was published, since it was published the day it met with the Undersecretary of State of the United States, Christopher Landau.

“Don’t you think it’s strange that when we are at the meeting, a note comes out of, I think it was Reuters, saying that they were asking us to give names of Mexican politicians? There is nothing more false than that,” said Sheinbaum.

The history published on Wednesday, based on four sources, said that the petition had been raised at least three times by the US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, and his team in bilateral meetings and conversations with Mexican officials.

Washington would have asked that politicians suspected of being linked to cartels are also potentially extradited to the United States if there are criminal charges what to answer there.

“We maintain our report,” said a Reuters spokesman.

The news agency article did not claim that Mexico had been asked to deliver names of Mexican politicians, but that the United States had pressed to the government of the Latin American country to investigate current officials, even if they were from Morena.

An offensive like this – which could aim at high -ranking officials while they are in power – would involve a drastic intensification of Mexico’s efforts against drug trafficking corruption, but entails political risks for Sheinbaum, since some of the accusations could touch members of his party, he told Reuters a member of his security cabinet.

Reuters could not determine if the United States had provided Mexico with a list of politicians suspected of having links with organized crime, or evidence against them. Nor could he confirm independently if any of the people indicated by the United States had committed a crime.
