The United States Department of Commerce investigates whether Deepseek, the Chinese company whose artificial intelligence model shook the technological world, has used US chips whose shipment to China is not allowed, said a reuters source.

Last week, Depseek launched a free assistant that, he says, uses less data and costs a fraction of the cost of US models.

In a matter of days, it became the most unloaded application in Apple’s App Store and aroused concerns about the United States leadership in artificial intelligence, which triggered a fall that eliminated around a billion dollars from US technological actions.

Nvidia restrictions prevent its most sophisticated artificial intelligence processors from reaching China.

The organized smuggling of artificial intelligence chips to China has been tracked from countries such as Malaysia, Singapore and the United Arab Emirates, said the source.

The Department of Commerce and Deepseek did not immediately respond to comments requests.

A Nvidia spokesman said that many of its customers have commercial entities in Singapore and use these entities for products for the United States and the West.

“We insist that our partners comply with all applicable laws and, if we receive information that indicates otherwise, act accordingly,” said Nvidia.

Deepseek said he used NVIDIA H800 chips, which could have legally bought in 2023.

Reuters could not determine if Depseek has used other controlled chips whose shipment to China is not allowed.

Apparently, Depseek also has the least powerful NVIDIA H20, which can still be legally sent to China.

The United States considered controlling them under the Biden administration and recently appointed officials of Trump are also discussing that.

“It seems that a substantial fraction of the Deepseek artificial intelligence chips fleet consists of chips that have not been prohibited (but they should be), chips that were sent before they were prohibited, and some that seem very likely that they have been smuggled ”Said the Executive Director of the Artificial Intelligence Company Anthropic, Dario Amodei.

The United States has implemented a series of restrictions that prohibit exports of artificial intelligence chips to China and plans to limit their shipments to a series of other countries.
