MEXICO CITY, (EFE) .- Activist Rigoberta Menchú, Nobel Peace Prize 1992, received her naturalization letter as Mexican from Foreign Minister Juan Ramón de la Fuente, representing President Claudia Sheinbaum.
From the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE), De la Source recognized the trajectory of Menchú in the defense of human rights and indigenous peoples.
In addition, he highlighted his contributions to academic life in various universities from both Mexico and abroad.
“At the headquarters of the SRE, Foreign Minister Juan Ramón de la Fuente received, on behalf of President Claudia Sheinbaum, A Rigoberta Menchú, Nobel Peace Prize 1992, to whom she delivered her letter of naturalization which accredits her as Mexican,” said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The Guatemalan activist has had a close relationship with Mexico for decades, especially after the exile he lived in the country during the armed conflict in Guatemala.
His work has influenced multiple initiatives related to women’s rights, native peoples and intercultural education.
The delivery of the document symbolizes the recognition of the State to an emblematic figure of the indigenous struggle in Latin America.
