US President Donald Trump is looking to buy Greenland, according to several media outlets citing statements made by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, preferring that to military action while Denmark’s prime minister warns that an attack risks ending the NATO alliance.
Key data
Rubio told lawmakers that Trump plans to purchase Greenland, a semi-autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, according to The Wall Street Journal.
Trump, who said last year that the United States would annex Greenland despite resistance from the territory’s and Denmark’s leaders, has not ruled out using military force to gain control of Greenland, the Journal reported, citing a statement from White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt.
Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen suggested Monday that a U.S. invasion of Greenland would violate decades-old NATO agreements.
Greenland’s ruling party, Demokraatit, said in March 2025: “We are not for sale… We don’t want to be Americans… We want to be Greenlanders.”
Forbes has contacted the White House and the State Department for comment.
Crucial ideals
“It is for Denmark and Greenland, and only them, to decide on matters that concern Denmark and Greenland,” said a joint statement issued Tuesday by the political leaders of Denmark, the United Kingdom, France and several other countries.
Key background
Trump’s desire for the United States to control Greenland has once again gained prominence after the launch of a US military operation to capture Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro during the early hours of Saturday. Observers question whether Trump might be encouraged to take action elsewhere. Trump has reiterated that the United States needs control of Greenland for national security reasons, saying it is vulnerable to Russia and China as long as it remains under Danish supervision.
