63.7% of the teaching staff in Mexico is composed of women and the rest by men, and despite this there is a salary gap by gender of 2,992.2 pesos on average, the Center for Economic and Budgetary Research (CIEP) highlighted.
He indicated in a report that in 2023, the gender wage gap calculated from the average monthly income was 14% in Mexico, three percentage points above the average in Latin America, which shows that women continue to receive lower remuneration than men.
The organization explained that at national level teachers in public schools receive an average income of 13,457 pesos, while that of men is 16,449.2 pesos, a salary gap of 18.2%.

As for private schools, the average income of teachers is 10,975.9 pesos, compared to 13,394.3 pesos that teachers receive, a 18.1%gap, a figure similar to that observed in the public sector.
He said that although only in preschool there is no disparity in the income of teachers and teachers, at other educational levels this gap is present.
The wage gap increases as the educational trajectory progresses. Both in public schools and in private schools, the largest difference is found in higher education, with 3,825.7 pesos and 3,970.1 pesos respectively. Nationally, when considering both sectors, the wage gap is around 18%.

He pointed out that since the majority of the teaching staff is made up of women, it is essential to guarantee from the budget an equitable salary structure that facilitates the attraction and retention of teachers’s talent.
He said that transparency in payroll distribution is not only essential for the well -being of teaching staff, but also enhances the recruitment of professionals with excellence in teaching, which, in turn, improves educational quality, and would have positive repercussions on the productivity and standard of living of the population.
