Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. evaluated President Donald Trump’s diet during a podcast, saying he is surprised the president is still alive because of the “poison” he frequently consumes.

Key data

During his participation in The Katie Miller Podcast —hosted by the wife of White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller—Kennedy was asked who has the most “unhinged” eating habits, and Kennedy paused before answering, “the president.”

“I don’t know how he’s still alive,” Kennedy said of Trump, noting that he “eats really bad food, which is McDonald’s, candy and Diet Coke. He drinks Diet Coke all the time. He’s built like a deity.”

According to Kennedy, when the president is in the White House or at Mar-a-Lago, he eats healthier, but eats fast food while traveling “because he trusts it and doesn’t want to get sick when he’s on the road.”

Crucial ideals

“If you travel with him, you realize he’s filling himself with venom all day and you don’t know how he’s still walking, let alone being the most energetic person any of us have ever met,” Kennedy said on the podcast.

Key background

After Trump’s annual physical last April, his doctor noted that the president was in “excellent health,” and Trump told reporters that he felt “in very good shape.”

However, his analyzes have come under scrutiny, as the focus on his weight, history of heart disease and some physical signs of aging led nearly half of Americans to believe Trump has not been completely transparent about his health, according to a May poll by YouGov and The Economist.

In a follow-up poll in September, 39% of respondents said they did not trust published information about Trump’s health, and 13% said they trusted it “just a little.”

Trump’s affinity for McDonald’s

The president’s taste for unhealthy food has been widely documented, including in the 2017 book Let Trump Be Trumpwhen the co-authors — two of his former aides — wrote: “In Trump Force One, there were four main food groups: McDonald’s, Kentucky Fried Chicken, pizza and Diet Coke.”

During the 2024 campaign, Trump visited a McDonald’s in Pennsylvania and worked the drive-thru window. And when he hosted the Clemson Tigers football team at the White House after winning the national championship in 2019, he served them Big Macs and French fries, along with food from Wendy’s, Burger King and pizza, telling reporters that he thought “that would be their favorite food.” The visit coincided with a government shutdown, and Trump said he bought the food.

Kennedy’s feelings about Trump’s diet had previously been shared by Republican National Committee Chairman Joe Gruters, who questioned during a podcast in October: “How does a guy his age allow himself to eat all this McDonald’s probably on a constant basis?”

Connection with recent news

Last week, Kennedy introduced a new “inverted” version of the food pyramid, emphasizing whole foods and proteins, including red meat. Highly processed foods are strongly discouraged under the new guidelines.
