“This is an effort by the Navy and the airport management to modernize the AICM and fulfill one of the commitments of the President of Mexico, in view of the 2026 World Cup, an event in which the country’s capital will host some games,” said the institution.

Engineers asked to close AICM

Previously, Jesús Navarro, president of the College of Mexican Aeronautical Engineers, said that the AICM represents a “danger” to air safety, which is why it must close operations.

Navarro, who was also vice president of the Aeronautical Material Purchasing Committee for Latin America, pointed out that the terminal in the Mexican capital is in “deplorable conditions.”

“We need to close the Mexico City airport. The current airport is an unsafe airport, it is inefficient because the placement of the two runways are not simultaneous and its location within the Valley of Mexico already makes it truly inoperative,” said Jesús Navarro.
