The Senate approved a reform to the Federal Law on Firearms and Explosives, proposed by then President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, which allows workers from entities such as the SAT, Banxico or Pemex, as well as private security companies, obtaining licenses to carry weapons, provided they justify their need and meet the legal requirements, according to a note from the Infobae website.
The initiative, unanimously approved with 105 votes, modifies more than 100 articles and was sent to President Claudia Sheinbaum for promulgation.
According to the opinion, it seeks to guarantee the security of strategic areas and public security, in accordance with the provisions of the Ministry of National Defense.
Among the most outstanding provisions, more severe sentences are established for crimes related to weapons.
Those who commit illicit with prohibited weapons will face 4 to 8 years in prison and fines of 700 to 1,500 umas. The illegal introduction of weapons, loaders or attachments to the country will be punished with 7 to 30 years in prison and fines of up to 2,000 umas.

The improper use of explosives or substances reserved for the Armed Forces will have sanctions of 6 to 12 years in prison, while the misuse of weapons assigned to police or justice institutions will carry 7 to 15 years in prison.
The reform also regulates specific activities. In the charrería, the use of larger caliber revolvers will be allowed as part of the traditional attire, provided they are downloaded.
However, the manufacture, possession or use of attachments that convert semi -automatic weapons in automatic are strictly prohibited, as well as the use of accessories such as holographic views, thermal or night vision equipment, to avoid illegal activities.
