This Tuesday, at least eight of the 11 ministers of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation will present their resignation from their respective positions; However, the president of the Board of Directors of the Chamber of Senators, Gerardo Fernández Noroña, raised the possibility that the senate would reject the jurists’ decision.
“We can not accept their resignations, not accept them,” said Fernández Noroña.
In a press conference, the senator for the Labor Party commented that there were no specific reasons why to reject the resignations, however, he commented that the Senate of the Republic is within its rights.
“The ministers of the Court are in rebellion,” commented Fernández Noroña.
The senator said that he does not know what will happen regarding the issue of abandonment of the charges and commented that “we will have to see” what happens.
So far, Minister Alfredo Gutiérrez Ortiz Mena was the first to present his resignation to the SCJN, it is expected that Minister President Norma Piña will also resign from her position.
Gerardo Fernández Noroña added that the Court seeks to overcome the rest of the powers, which are the executive and the legislative.
“What they are actually doing is declining in the 2025 electoral process, which will cause them to leave with their saddlebags full with the current terms,” he said.
It is worth remembering that after the approval of the judicial reform, one of the most important points is the election of judges, magistrates and ministers by popular vote, a process that will take place in July 2025 and where more than 1,700 positions will be elected, the second round of elections would be held in 2027.
According to the president of the Board of Directors, so far 51 judges and 152 magistrates have declined to participate in the election process, a total of 203.
Noroña said that of this total, 15 judges will not participate because they will go to another position in the same judicial branch, while 16 magistrates will also seek a different nomination.
