PAN senator Marko Cortés announced the presentation of an initiative to reform the Constitution so that the head of the National Human Rights Commission is elected by popular vote.

“It is supposed to be the great defender of the people of Mexico, the National Human Rights Commission, this is where I would tell the Moreno government what objection they would have to this commission, which today is a zero to the left, really could be elected by all the people throughout the country,” he stated.

In a press conference, he indicated that this process is different from that of the election of ministers, judges, magistrates, which requires a certain level of technicalization, capacity and not just popularity.

“But the CNDH is the one who is going to defend the people from any abuse of power by the government, both federal, state and municipal,” he said.

Last Monday, the united Human Rights and Justice commissions approved the draft call for the election or, where appropriate, re-election of the president of the CNDH, María Rosario Piedra Ibarra, for the period 2024-2029.

Senator Javier Corral recalled that the Law of the National Human Rights Commission allows the person holding the current position the possibility of re-election, but also subjects the holder to the procedures, deadlines and requirements of the call in terms of consultation, appearance and assessment.

For this reason, he asked legislators to remain open to this process “with high vision.”

PAN senator Ricardo Anaya pointed out that Piedra Ibarra has not lived up to the position, since his management was an “absolute disaster,” and commented that he “will vote” for the Senate to appoint the best profile, a person with all the credentials, proof of any interference from power, “because a strong Commission with moral authority is needed.”

Piedra Ibarra arrived at the CNDH in 2022, however, she has been accused of omissions in different acts that violated the human rights of civilians and migrants during the government of Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

Anaya concluded that given the “militarization” of the country, a counterweight is necessary in the CNDH and regretted a possible re-election of Piedra Ibarra.

They ask to correct security strategy

Marko Cortés took the opportunity to ask President Claudia Sheinbaum to correct the security strategy in the country, and to classify the crime of narcoterrorism, so that international collaboration and effective results can be achieved “and that Mexicans can live at peace”.

Cortés Mendoza offered the collaboration of National Action to change the strategy, and that there be “true international coordination and collaboration” in the fight against organized crime.

“It is not about submission, it is not about losing the autonomy or sovereignty of our country. Mexicans lose sovereignty when they cannot travel on a highway, when they cannot sell their products without being extorted,” he explained.
